Protect Cambridge Gulf — Stop Industrial Sand Dredging

Protect Cambridge Gulf — Stop Industrial Sand Dredging
The issue
The Cambridge Gulf in northern Western Australia is one of the last untouched estuarine ecosystems in the nation — home to threatened sawfish, crocodile nurseries, migratory shorebirds, turtles, barramundi and mud crab fisheries, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and deeply significant Indigenous Sea Country.
Now, a major international dredging company is seeking to extract sand from this fragile system and export it overseas. Around the world, sand dredging projects have caused documented environmental harm, including:
-Seagrass die-off and mangrove loss
-Sediment plumes spreading beyond predictions
-Altered currents and coastal erosion
-Long-term declines in fisheries and marine habitats
The public has a very short window to appeal this proposal, yet the environmental and cultural stakes are enormous.
We call on the WA Environment Minister M. Swinbourn, to reject the project and demonstrate full transparency and leadership. We urge the WA Government and our local member Divina D’Anna to ensure that the Cambridge Gulf is protected for future generations.
Sign and share to help protect our coastline, our wildlife, and our cultural heritage before it’s too late.
