The Issue

The picturesque countryside of Burstall and rural Suffolk is under threat. Plans to develop 85 acres of battery storage facilities including 1.5 gigawatts of power from BESS  in this beautiful part of England could destroy the natural landscape, harm wildlife, and disrupt the tranquillity of our community. These development proposals do not reflect the wishes of the local residents who cherish their green spaces and rural environment.

Burstall and rural Suffolk are known for their beautiful open fields, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including protected species such as barn owls, kestrels, and badgers. Large-scale storage developments would not only lead to habitat destruction but also increase pollution levels, and disturb the ecological balance, posing serious threats to our wildlife.  4 significant ancient woodland blocks, containing  service trees, would be severely impacted. The proposed site cuts right through an ancient sheep droving route, Cook Lane and tranquil spaces and footpaths that people have walked and  enjoyed for years. The developers have completely ignored and massively understated the historic and natural biodiversity of this land to deem it of insignificance to get their planning.

Moreover, these battery storages plants are a huge fire risk.  For example a thermal runaway fire, where a damaged or faulty lithium-ion battery overheats, causing a chain reaction that can release intense heat, toxic gases and, in some cases, explosions. To consider as well is the longer emergency response times in rural areas.

Traffic congestion caused by the heavy machinery during construction, along with the increase in vehicles once the storage facilities become operational, would severely impact the quality of life for residents. Noise pollution whilst construction is ongoing is something else to consider along with the battery cooling systems that once in use will be a permanent loud noise especially on warm days.

We all want to be on the side of sustainability and renewable energies but unfortunately this battery storage isn’t to benefit the country, this is simply a money making scheme where power can be bought in at a low price, stored and then sold to other countries when the price spikes.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand to stop BESS and protect the unique charm and environment of Burstall and rural Suffolk. Let us work together to ensure a sustainable future for our community and generations to come whilst also  protecting our natural environment and even try to enhance it.
