The Issue

We, the residents and supporters of Bugibba, urge the relevant authorities to halt the proposed construction of a massive apartment complex in the heart of our town, namely, in Triq il-Halel - a main exit road out of Dawret il-Gzejjer, Bugibba and the demolision of the Sunseeker hotel behind. We call for a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to urban planning -- one that respects our community, environment, and overall quality of life.

Bugibba is already saturated with numerous small, poorly designed flats that neither serve the needs of families nor support long-term residential living. The proposed development threatens to introduce even more low-quality units, aimed solely at short-term profit rather than sustainable urban growth.

Our infrastructure is under significant strain. The drainage and sewage systems in Bugibba already struggle during periods of heavy rainfall. Further residential expansion risks overwhelming these outdated systems, increasing the likelihood of flooding and serious sanitation problems.

Additionally, such a large-scale project would severely impact Bugibba's tourism sector -- a vital part of our local economy. Visitors are drawn to our town for its coastal charm and relaxed atmosphere, not to be surrounded by construction sites and high-rise concrete blocks. Eroding this appeal would be a short-sighted and costly mistake.

Traffic and parking are persistent challenges in the area. With limited space already, the introduction of hundreds of new residents and vehicles would create further congestion, reducing accessibility for both locals and visitors.

This proposal represents unsustainable urban growth. Malta -- and Bugibba in particular -- is already overbuilt. Instead of expanding indiscriminately, the priority should be on improving existing structures, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing the livability of our town.

We stand united in defense of Bugibba. Let's protect what makes our town special -- before it's lost beneath another wall of concrete.
