Protect Buckwheat Road — Keep Our Bridge Safe and Our Street Quiet

The Issue

We, the residents of Buckwheat Road, strongly oppose the proposed changes to widen the bridge and straighten the road.

The current plan would widen the bridge for two-way traffic and straighten the road on both sides - encouraging faster, and potentially even more, traffic. While the current bridge is considered two lanes today, it has been a de facto one-lane crossing for years, naturally forcing cars to slow down and take turns. This has helped preserve the safety and character of our street. In addition, this project is expected to cost approximately $4 million in taxpayer money—a one-lane bridge with a walking lane could possibly lower the overall cost.

Prioritize Safety over Speed

This change would transform our quiet, family-centered street into a high-speed shortcut. Buckwheat Road is home to multiple young families with toddlers and babies, as well as working farms with livestock. It is a place where neighbors walk daily and value a sense of security. Increasing traffic flow directly puts our children, our animals, and our community at risk.

A Waste of Taxpayer Dollars

Beyond the safety concerns, this project is a gross misuse of public funds. The proposed overhaul is estimated to cost $4 million.
• Unnecessary Expense: Spending millions to "fix" a road that functions perfectly for its residents is not a responsible use of our tax dollars.
• Better Use of Funds: This money should be directed toward essential services or infrastructure that actually benefits the community, rather than a project that actively degrades our quality of life.

Preserving Our Character
The current character of the road is worth preserving. The one-lane bridge and the natural curve of the road serve as organic "traffic calming" measures. They discourage speeding and ensure that Buckwheat Road remains a place for people, not a thoroughfare for fast-moving transit.

We urge decision-makers to cancel this $4 million project and preserve Buckwheat Road as it is: safe, calm, and fiscally responsible.
