The free-roaming horses of Breathitt County, Kentucky, are a treasured part of our local culture, natural landscape, and community identity. These horses have roamed our hills and forests for generations, bringing beauty and pride to our region.

Recently, the Breathitt County Fiscal Court has considered actions that could lead to the removal of these horses. We, the undersigned, strongly oppose any decision that would take away their freedom or endanger their lives.

These horses:

Enhance local tourism and community pride.
Contribute to the uniqueness of our region.
Hold cultural and historical significance for the people of Breathitt County.

We respectfully request that the Breathitt County Fiscal Court:

Recognize the value these horses bring to our community’s heritage and reject all plans to remove the free-roaming horses.

Explore humane, sustainable management options that allow the horses to remain free. 

The Appalachian Horse Project has already drafted, and is ready to implement a management plan to make this sustainable.

Let’s keep these horses free, for us and for future generations.
