Protect Boston's Health: Remove the Corrupted Leaders of the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The Issue

Citizens/Friends of Boston and Member of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Faculty and Staff,

Boston is a leader in many arenas of American life and history. This is, perhaps, most true of American medicine, where Boston serves as the most powerful and prestigious medical city in the world. The people of Boston ought be proud of this tradition.

But with a tradition of excellence and prestige comes an enormous responsibility, which you must hold your city, your hospitals and your leaders up to.

In October 2013, my wife Dr. Amy Reed was critically harmed at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where I trained and was a surgeon.

Amy’s cancer was spread all over her abdominal cavity, creating a man-made advanced stage cancer, using a careless gynecological practice known as “morcellation”.

You can read our story in the March 2016 issue of Boston Magazine:

http://www.bostonmagazine.com/health/article/2016/03/20/amy-reed-morcellation/

Until my wife and I raised an alarm and forced the FDA to restrain this practice, hundreds of thousands of women across the United States and the world were at risk (for over 20 years):

We later found that other women had been harmed and, avoidably or prematurely, died at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/cancer-risk-debate-didnt-halt-surgeries-1416788753

The Hospital’s upper leadership had known about this public health hazard for at least two years. But because the practice was profitable and easy, and because only a minority of women would get deadly harmed, they suppressed the information from the public and did not raise a national alarm.

The following leaders at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital are responsible for suppressing information that could have saved hundreds, if not thousands, of women worldwide - they all knew:

Dr. Robert Barbieri MD, chief of Gynecology.

Dr. Stan Ashley MD, Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Elizabeth Nabel MD, President.

Dr. Ron Walls MD, Chief Operating Officer.

Dr. Michael Muto MD, fellowship director in Gynecological Oncology.

Dr. Jon Einarsson MD, Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Not only did these members of Boston’s leading academic medical establishment, these Harvard professors, not move with resolve to protect women in harm’s way – they attempted to suppress my efforts. You can read about this here:

and

http://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2014/7/when-a-common-gynecological-procedure-turns-deadly/page-01

They even resorted to corporate intimidation and bullying tactics, at a time when my wife was most vulnerable, to shut me down. You can read about this here:

But, as a Boston-trained surgeon, as a friend of the City of Boston, as husband to my wife, as a father and as an advocate for all patient’s in harm’s way from carelessness in our money and ego driven medical system – I ask that you consider:

Is this what Boston leadership is about? Is this what you want your city and your hospitals to become? Are these the leaders you will entrust yourselves and your loved ones’ care to?

Join us in demanding that Partners Health CEO, Dr. David Torchiana, remove and replace the current leadership of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital with men and women of integrity, who understand that their first and foremost responsibility is to people’s lives and to the City of Boston – not to their institutional interests, egos and money. There are many Brigham physicians who honor their professional vows to act ethically and with strength to protect lives – but they are not leading the Brigham. They are marginalized and live in the shadows of that institution.

Boston, and its Harvard Institutions, used to create and change the world. Perhaps you will rise to defend Boston and the Brigham’s exceptionalism, in peril from within.

Perhaps, you will agree that "enough is enough!"

A friend to Boston, to the Brigham, and to patients in harm’s way across our nation from corporate carelessness and arrogance in medicine,

Hooman Noorchashm MD, PhD

Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
