Protect bikers, runners & pedestrians on the Williamsburg Bridge

Protect bikers, runners & pedestrians on the Williamsburg Bridge

The Issue

Have you ever felt scared that you might get injured by a moped that was somewhere it didn't belong,  going too fast, or moving in the wrong direction?

My fears came true.  Eight weeks ago I was running across the Williamsburg bridge in the pedestrian lane and a moped hit me from behind. I screamed in pain as I hit the ground for someone to help me and call an ambulance. The moped driver (unlicensed & unregistered) said he had no ID, ignored my screams to call 911 and left the scene.  I was lucky and only broke my femur at the joint in 3 pieces requiring surgery to insert a plate and 7 screws & at least a year of excruciatingly painful, expensive, and frustrating recovery in order to just be able to walk again.

DMV rules require every moped (having no operable pedals) be registered, drivers to be licensed, and mopeds are never allowed in bike lanes - and yet 30-50% of vehicles in the Williamsburg Bridge bike lane at any given time are mopeds (without operable pedals).  These mopeds drive fast, weigh a lot, and are a huge danger to pedestrians, runners, and bikers.

With your support, I plan to take this petition to Lincoln Restler (Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge City Council) and Carlina Rivera (Manhattan side of the Williamsburg Bridge City Council) to get their help in getting mopeds out of the pedestrian and bike lanes of the bridge so we can feel safe walking, running, and biking - uses that those lanes were intended for.
