As a hard-working Belizean taxpayer, I am tired of seeing our hard-earned dollars being potentially manipulated through loopholes like invoice splitting. With the cost of living rising, every dollar of public funds should be heavily scrutinized and spent transparently, not hidden behind outdated thresholds or bypasses.
For too long, recent scandals have exposed how easily public funds can be manipulated by government officials. Currently, in Belize, any government procurement under $10,000 can be approved directly within a ministry without higher-level oversight. This means that significant amounts of taxpayer money can be used without proper scrutiny or accountability, leading to potential misuse through practices like invoice splitting.
Leaked financial logs have revealed a widespread practice of distributing government contracts just below the $10,000 threshold to avoid oversight, effectively bypassing the safeguards designed to protect public funds. This practice strips away the transparency and accountability that Belizeans deserve and further erodes public trust in our governing bodies.
We need urgent action to protect Belize’s taxes. We must demand that the government lowers the $10,000 spending limit on procurement to a more reasonable and accountable level. By doing so, Belize can prevent the manipulation of public funds and ensure that every dollar spent is used for the betterment of our communities.
Our taxes should go towards improving our hospitals, upgrading our roads, and supporting our communities, not filling the pockets of a select few. It’s time to close these loopholes and increase the transparency of how taxpayer money is spent.
