Protect Balch Springs Ponds and Natural Areas – Stop Destructive Vegetation Clearing

The Issue

The City of Balch Springs has ordered staff and contractors to strip away natural vegetation around detention ponds, forested groves, and other green spaces. This misguided “maintenance” destroys wildlife habitat, destabilizes pond banks, accelerates water loss, and leaves our ponds and groves sterile, costly, and fragile.

These areas are living systems that provide free services for both the environment and our community:

  • Flood Control & Water Retention: Vegetation stabilizes soil and slows runoff, reducing flooding and property damage.
  • Water Quality & Public Health: Plants filter pollutants, reduce algae, and support aquatic life that naturally controls mosquitoes, lowering disease risk.
  • Recreation & Mental Health: Forested groves, ponds, and natural areas offer beauty, shade, and spaces for walking, play, and relaxation — proven to improve physical and mental well-being.
  • Energy & Utility Savings: Trees and vegetation provide shade and cooling, reducing residential and municipal energy use for air conditioning.
  • Healthcare Cost Reduction: Access to green spaces is linked to lower stress, reduced blood pressure, improved mental health, and increased physical activity — all contributing to lower medical expenses.
  • Cost Savings: Healthy ecosystems reduce the need for expensive dredging, chemical treatments, and mowing, saving taxpayer dollars.

Most residents value the natural charm of these areas, and many are alarmed by the destructive practices now being used. Complaint calls represent only a fraction of voices, and they do not speak for the community as a whole.

We demand that the City of Balch Springs immediately halt vegetation clearing operations and instead develop an evidence-based management plan that protects biodiversity, water quality, and community assets.

Add your name to show city leaders that Balch Springs residents want healthy, living ponds and groves — not scorched-earth “maintenance” that harms our environment and wastes taxpayer dollars!
