Protect Audiences: Cancel the Haunting Adeline Film Adaptation
Le problème
Petition to Halt the Film Adaptation of
Haunting Adeline
We urge producers to reconsider adapting
Haunting Adeline
into a film.
We, the undersigned, respectfully call on the producers and rights holders to reconsider and ultimately cancel the planned film adaptation of Haunting Adeline.
This petition is not about banning books or limiting artistic freedom. Adults have the right to read the stories they choose, including dark romance. Likewise, authors have the right to write fictional works.
However, adapting a novel into a film dramatically increases its reach and cultural impact. A movie has the potential to reach millions of viewers worldwide, including audiences who may not fully understand the themes or context presented in the original book.
Haunting Adeline contains graphic depictions of sexual violence, stalking, manipulation, torture, coercion, and abusive relationships. While readers knowingly choose to engage with these themes, a high-profile film adaptation could normalize or romanticize behaviors that are deeply harmful in real life.
Our concerns include:
The potential romanticization of stalking, coercion, and abuse.
The wider exposure of younger audiences to disturbing content.
The normalization of sexual and psychological violence through mainstream entertainment.
The possible impact on survivors of abuse and sexual violence, who may be confronted with extensive marketing surrounding the film.
We recognize that fiction can explore difficult subjects. Our concern is not the existence of the novel itself, but the consequences of adapting it into a widely marketed visual production.
We respectfully ask the producers and rights holders to reconsider this project and to reflect on the broader social impact such an adaptation could have.
This petition is not directed against the author or the readers of Haunting Adeline. Everyone is entitled to their own literary preferences. Our request concerns only the decision to adapt this particular story for a mass audience.
If you share these concerns, please sign this petition and help encourage a thoughtful discussion about the responsibility that comes with adapting stories involving extreme violence and abuse.
Thank you for your support.
