The Issue

Athens and the surrounding Henderson County communities are at a critical moment.

Recent discussions and regional trends suggest that large-scale data center developments may soon expand into rural areas like ours. While technology growth can bring opportunity, these projects also come with serious long-term impacts that must be carefully considered before any decisions are made.

As business owners, families, and residents of Athens, we are calling for a temporary pause (moratorium) on the approval of any large-scale data center projects in Athens and surrounding areas until a full, transparent community impact assessment is completed.

Our concerns include:

1. Strain on Local Power Infrastructure

Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity, which can:

Increase risk of outages
Drive up energy costs for residents and businesses
Require major grid expansion funded indirectly by taxpayers

2. Water Usage and Environmental Impact

Many data centers require significant water for cooling systems, potentially impacting:

Local water availability
Agricultural needs
Long-term sustainability of our region

3. Limited Local Economic Benefit

Despite large footprints, data centers:

Create relatively few permanent jobs
Provide limited long-term economic circulation compared to other developments
Can displace opportunities for more community-integrated growth

4. Land Use and Community Character

Athens is known for its character, open space, and quality of life. Large industrial-scale facilities could:

Alter the visual landscape
Reduce property values in nearby areas
Change the identity of our community

What We Are Asking For:

We respectfully request that local officials, county commissioners, and economic development authorities:

Enact a temporary moratorium on new data center approvals
Conduct a comprehensive impact study (power, water, environmental, economic)
Hold public hearings with full transparency
Ensure any future decisions reflect the voice of the community

This Is About Responsible Growth

We are not against progress.

We are for smart, transparent, and community-first decision-making that protects Athens for current residents and future generations.

If you live in Athens, Henderson County, or surrounding areas—your voice matters.
