The Issue

I am the owner of Ashtead Post Office, a cornerstone of our community situated at 39 The Street, KT21 1AA. Recently, Royal Mail announced plans to replace the existing pillar box outside our premise with a modern "smart box" designed to handle letters and small parcels conveniently. While technological advancements promise efficiency, these changes pose a significant threat to local businesses and community health.

For generations, Ashtead Post Office has been more than just a place for sending and receiving mail; it has been a community hub—a place where elderly and vulnerable villagers find support, friendship, and essential services. With this "smart box," Royal Mail's plans could divert parcel and letter traffic away from our Post Office counter, which would directly reduce our income.

A decrease in revenue doesn’t just impact the financial aspect of the Post Office. It risks undermining service levels and, consequently, the jobs of dedicated staff members who are often familiar faces to our valued customers. The viability of Ashtead Post Office is critically linked to its ability to provide comprehensive services to local residents. Any reduction in our income could lead to a rapid end of this service, affecting countless local and vulnerable individuals who rely on us.

Moreover, the changes threaten to hasten the demise of our entire high street. Local businesses are interconnected; when one suffers, the entire community can feel the ripple effects. The potential closure of Ashtead Post Office would be more than a loss of business; it would be a loss of communal cohesion and support for Ashtead's residents.

Therefore, we urgently call upon Royal Mail to reconsider these proposed changes that stand to harm Ashtead's economic and social fabric significantly. By signing this petition, you show support for protecting Ashtead Post Office, retaining local jobs, preserving our High Street, and safeguarding a critical service for the elderly and vulnerable. Let's ensure that Ashtead remains a thriving, connected community. Please sign this petition and join us in our stand to safeguard our Post Office’s future and preserve our cherished community.
