Protect Arizona Families: End Drug Use, Public Smoking & Violence in Our Shared Spaces
La causa
Decision Maker: Arizona Department of Health Services, Tucson Mayor's Office, Local Law Enforcement, City Council Members.
> Enough is enough. Arizona families are under threat in public spaces.
Every day, parents walk their children to the bus stop, people ride bikes to work, and families try to enjoy parks—only to be met with open drug use, secondhand smoke, and sometimes outright violence from individuals who refuse help and continue to put others at risk.
This isn't just about discomfort. It's about safety.
Children inhale toxic secondhand smoke while waiting for buses.
Parents are harassed by individuals using drugs or experiencing psychosis.
People are being chased, assaulted, or threatened on public bike trails.
Many no longer feel safe walking alone in their own neighborhoods.
We are not heartless—we know many homeless individuals are struggling with addiction and mental health—but compassion must include protection for innocent families. Our rights matter too.
We are demanding:
Enforced smoke-free zones at all bus stops, parks, and near schools
Stronger action on public drug use and aggressive behavior in shared spaces
Patrols and safety measures on bike trails where people are being harmed
Expanded mental health outreach with firm boundaries for those refusing help
Priority placed on protecting children and everyday citizens—not just enabling unsafe behavior
The system is broken when working parents can't safely get their kids to school or ride a bike without fear for their lives. We're done staying silent.

Who is impacted?
Every day, Arizona families encounter threats in public spaces. Parents escorting their children to bus stops are met with clouds of secondhand smoke. Cyclists and pedestrians face harassment or worse on bike trails. The presence of individuals engaging in open drug use or experiencing severe mental health crises has transformed our parks, sidewalks, and transit areas into zones of concern rather than community.
What is at stake?
If we continue to overlook these issues, the safety and well-being of our communities will further deteriorate. Children will remain exposed to harmful substances, residents will avoid public spaces, and the sense of community will be eroded.
Why is now the time to act?
Recent initiatives, like Pima County's pilot program deploying security on The Loop, demonstrate that proactive measures can enhance safety. However, these efforts need to be expanded and enforced consistently across the state.
We demand:
Enforcement of smoke-free zones at all bus stops, parks, and near schools to protect our children from secondhand smoke.
Stronger actions against public drug use and aggressive behavior in shared spaces to ensure community safety.
Regular patrols and safety measures on bike trails and public areas to prevent harassment and violence.
Expanded mental health outreach with clear protocols for individuals refusing help, balancing compassion with public safety.
Prioritization of the safety of families and everyday citizens, ensuring public spaces are welcoming and safe for all.
The current state of our public spaces is unacceptable. It's time for our leaders to take decisive action to restore safety and peace in our communities.
