Protect animals with a national animal abuser registry

Protect animals with a national animal abuser registry
The Issue
Every morning as I look at my dogs and my snake, I am reminded of the responsibility it takes to keep them not just alive, but thriving. It's a commitment far beyond a simple bag of kibble or the glow of a heat lamp—it requires love, care, and constant vigilance to ensure their well-being. Knowing what it truly means to care for them makes it all the more painful when I witness animals living in squalor, neglected, abused, and yet the law tells us that it's legal. This disparity between what is right and what is lawful gnaws at me because I understand those animals are enduring unnecessary suffering, betrayed by inadequate protective measures.
This is why I am pressing for the establishment of a federally mandated, public-facing National Animal Abuser Registry. This registry would serve as a critical tool for shelters, veterinarians, breeders, charities, and the wider public to identify and prevent known offenders from continuing a cycle of abuse. By holding a list that publicly names those convicted of felony animal cruelty or neglect, we can ensure greater accountability and halt this revolving door of abuse.
The creation of such a registry, paired with an automatic, lifetime ban on animal ownership for offenders, would address the alarming gap in our legal system. Currently, someone can be convicted of horrendous acts of cruelty, only to have the opportunity to repeat their actions on new victims. Studies show that individuals who abuse animals are far more likely to repeat their offenses or even escalate to further violence. This registry would not only save countless animals from suffering but would bolster public safety as a whole.
In the United States, animals continue to suffer because there is no centralized system to track abusers. People move state to state, sometimes even across cities, leaving a trail of abuse unchecked. A national registry would dismantle the anonymity perpetrators rely on, turning the tide in favor of these voiceless beings who need our protection the most.
Please help us protect our beloved animals by implementing this life-saving registry and ownership ban. It's time for aligned action to make a change that is as strong as the love we hold for our pets. Sign this petition today, stand with us in demanding justice and protection for all animals.
