Protect Animal Welfare! No to Puppy Mills and Unethical Animal Breeders in the Philippines
The Issue
We, the BA Communication students, who also support the advocates for the animal rights stand firmly against puppy mills and unethical breeders in the Philippines. In an ever-changing world of business, animal cruelty is no exemption. The people who are accountable behind puppy mills and unethical breeding of pets have been benefiting from these types of inhumane businesses at the expense of the welfare of the animals.
As defined by the The Philippine Animal Welfare Society, puppy mills pertain to place or individuals who involve in the commercial breeding of animals, which unethical animal breeders are part of it. It is done through maximizing the profit by producing the highest number of puppies at the lowest possible cost of ways. Every year, data shows that there are 2 million puppies are bred in puppy mills. For what purpose? Profit is simply the answer. In fact, these puppies are being taken away from their mother to be sold immediately despite their vulnerable conditions as these breeders believe that the selling opportunity is high during the stage of puppyhood.
What do we see in puppy mills?
1. Dogs are being kept in cramped conditions where they expected to eat, sleep, and give birth.
2. Filthy conditions and inadequate supply of food, water, and medical care which result to many health conditions being carried by the puppies
3. Female breeders are giving birth litter after litter and non-stop at every opportunity regardless if they injured, sick, and have genetic traits until their bodies become weak and cannot conceive anymore which lead to their death.
4. When dogs are already weak or no longer profitable, they are being killed or abandoned.
How can we contribute to the solutions?
Promoting the adoption of pets from shelters instead of purchasing from breeders can reduce demand for inhumane breeding practices. Stricter laws regulating breeding and enforcing penalties for violations are essential for ensuring animal welfare. Public awareness campaigns can educate communities about responsible pet ownership and the realities of puppy mills. Additionally, encouraging pet stores to adopt "puppy-friendly" policies by not selling puppies and supporting local shelters can further promote humane treatment of animals.
If you are an animal lover, advocate for animal rights, supporter of organizations or laws that prohibit animal cruelty, or even someone who wants to acquire a pet, use your privilege to sign this petition. Together, let us stop the operation of puppy mills and unethical animal breeders by refusing to support them. Dogs and other animals have the rights as humans do. There is no place for animal cruelty in this world.
