Protect and preserve monk seals

Protect and preserve monk seals
The Issue
I've always had a profound admiration for monk seals. Their playful nature, curious eyes, and gentle demeanor are captivating. However, behind their charm lies a harsh reality – monk seals are dying at an alarming rate, and it's heartbreaking to witness their decline.
Monk seals are one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet. With only around 1,100 Hawaiian monk seals and approximately 700 Mediterranean monk seals left, their populations are critically low. Several factors contribute to this decline, including habitat destruction, entanglement in fishing gear, ocean pollution, and human disturbance.
Protecting monk seals is not just about saving a single species, but preserving an entire ecosystem. Monk seals play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine environments. As apex predators, they help regulate fish populations and contribute to the health of coral reefs.
We can make a difference by implementing stricter regulations on fishing practices, establishing more marine protected areas, and promoting awareness about the importance of monk seals in our ecosystems. Encouraging local communities to participate in clean-up activities and advocating for research on monk seal health and habitat use are also vital steps we can take.
By supporting this petition, we can urge governments and relevant authorities to prioritize the conservation of monk seals, ensuring these magnificent creatures continue to grace our oceans for generations to come. Please sign this petition to stand up for monk seals and be a voice for the voiceless.
baby monk seals and their moms die from a terrible disease that spreads to each of them. The disease they are dying from is very deadly, it is called toxoplasmosis. This causes loss of brain function and fetal loss. They get this disease from Feral cats they shed parasite eggs (oocysts) in their feces. The rainwater washes the Feral cats eggs into the ocean which causes Monk seals to get infected and die.
I love monk seals and I want to know more and more about them every single day. These seals are so cute. So we made petitions to save them from going extinct and we have a profound admiration for monk seals and I Grady O’Donnell even made the senates of hawaii my decision makers and they are trying to stop monk seals from going extinct as fast as they can they are trying to stop monk seals from getting disease and going extenct there are 4 to 6 deaths of monk seals a day. so I think we should pray for them because there are approximately 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals left so can we please all pray for them and there are possibly 480 days left until they go extinct.
September was a good month for this seal, as the juvenile male seal was released back to the wild after a life-saving procedure.
In late August, the hospital for seals received multiple calls from community members who reported a fishing line trailing from the seal’s mouth. they quickly assembled a rescue team with partners from the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources, The Marine Mammal Center, and community volunteers. On site, they confirmed the seal had likely swallowed a fishing hook and needed medical intervention. The Center coordinated emergency transport via Mauna Loa Helicopters to Ke Kai Ola, the Center’s Hawaiian monk seal hospital in Kona, Hawaiʻi Island.
Thankfully the hook removal procedure went well, and the seal was released back on Kauaʻi in early September!
Incidents like the seal’s, as well as the untimely recent death of 2-year-old female seal, show the importance of reporting hooked seals as soon as possible.
Hawaiian monk seals are naturally curious and opportunistic feeders. Unfortunately, sometimes easy-looking meals come with strings attached—like a fishing line and hook. These unintentional hookings are a risk that comes with shared ocean spaces—and one we all can reduce together with awareness and quick action.
