Protect agricultural land and responsible growth in Lee County

Protect agricultural land and responsible growth in Lee County
The Issue
Lee County is facing a critical crossroads in its development. As residents who cherish the rich agricultural heritage and natural beauty of our community, we are deeply concerned about the rapid conversion of our vital agricultural lands into high-density residential and commercial developments. This is not what smart growth looks like—it's overdevelopment without adequate infrastructure or consideration for the long-term well-being of our community.
Agricultural lands form the backbone of Lee County’s local economy, providing both jobs and fresh produce that enrich our lives and contribute to our health. These lands also serve as critical habitats for wildlife, including the beloved Florida sandhill crane, and play a fundamental role in environmental sustainability by providing green spaces and maintaining biodiversity.
However, we're watching as these essential spaces rapidly vanish under the weight of relentless development. Roads are congested, traffic is becoming intolerable, and the drainage infrastructure is inadequate to handle heavy growth. We must recognize the crucial balance needed between development and preservation to protect not only the quality of life for current residents but for future generations.
We are calling upon the Lee County Board of County Commissioners to take decisive action to:
- Halt the conversion of agricultural land to high-density development immediately.
- Invest in improving infrastructure like roads, traffic management, and drainage systems before considering new developments.
- Protect our natural environment and wildlife by ensuring these areas are not sacrificed in the name of unchecked growth.
- Utilize programs such as Lee County Conservation 20/20 effectively, aiming to preserve and protect remaining open spaces and agricultural lands.
Change and growth are inevitable, but they must be strategically planned, taking into consideration the environmental, economic, and social impacts on our community. Ensuring responsible and sustainable development practices will protect the integrity of Lee County’s environment and community for years to come.
Join us in advocating for sustainable development and the preservation of our agricultural lands. Please sign this petition to urge the Lee County Board of County Commissioners to act in the best interest of our community by fostering planned, responsible, and environmentally-conscious growth for Lee County. Together, we can ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for all of our residents.
