The Issue

The tobacco industry has evolved its marketing methods to target African children.

The industry is circumventing legal bans on advertising and actively targeting teenagers with novel products such as vapes, electronic cigarettes, and nicotine pouches.

They are using influencer marketing to hook young people in countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa and Senegal.

We need stronger action to protect a new generation from being targeted by the tobacco industry.

Join us as we call on African leaders to Protect Children from Tobacco Industry Interference.

We, the undersigned, call on African governments to take immediate action to stop tobacco industry interference in Africa. The tobacco industry's tactics have long exploited our continent, targeting vulnerable populations, including women and youth, and undermining public health efforts. It's time to stand against these harmful practices and protect our communities.

We urge African governments to:

  1. Enforce strong tobacco control policies, including comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.
  2. Enact complete bans on vapes, e-cigarettes and shisha
  3. Reject partnerships or collaborations with the tobacco industry that endanger children and undermine public health objectives.
Invest in public education campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and industry tactics.
  4. Protect children from online tobacco advertising by imposing fines and penalties for promoting tobacco products on social media.
  5. Promote smoke-free environments to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke exposure.

Together, we can create a healthier and tobacco-free Africa.
