Protect Access to Evidence-Based Mental Health Treatment

The Issue

Millions of Americans rely on SSRIs and other antidepressants to manage depression, anxiety, and other serious mental health conditions. While all medications should be prescribed carefully and responsibly, there is no clear scientific consensus proving that SSRIs are being overprescribed in a way that causes more harm than good.

What is well established is that untreated or undertreated depression can have devastating and life-threatening consequences, including suicide, hospitalization, addiction, job loss, and family instability. Restricting access to effective treatment without strong evidence risks putting vulnerable people in danger.

Mental health care should remain based on medical evidence, individual patient needs, and decisions made between patients and licensed healthcare professionals — not broad political assumptions about psychiatric medication.

We urge policymakers to protect access to evidence-based mental health treatment and avoid policies that could discourage or limit appropriate SSRI prescribing for those who need it.
