The Issue
I am a high school English teacher passionate about fostering a love for reading in my students. Recently, I have witnessed an unsettling trend in my state, where many titles are being removed from our school's choice list—not for instruction but as optional reading. This troubling development is limiting my students' exposure to diverse narratives, leaving them without representation on their library shelves.
In a time when we are facing a literacy crisis, it is more important than ever to empower students by expanding their access to literature. Books are windows to the world, offering insights into different cultures, experiences, and perspectives that are crucial for my students' growth. Every student deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, to feel empowered and motivated on their educational journey.
Book bans are not the solution—they are a step back in our educational mission. Instead of stifling access, we should be offering students a wide range of books that promote critical thinking and empathy. Diverse books help students develop the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly multicultural society.
A national study showed that students have better learning outcomes when they engage with diverse materials that reflect their own backgrounds. Exposure to varied narratives enhances not only literacy but also the socio-emotional skills necessary for thriving in school and society.
I urge state legislators, educators, and community members to stand with me in opposing harmful book bans and instead support initiatives that safeguard access to a diverse array of books in our schools. Let us work together to ensure our libraries remain inclusive spaces that welcome all voices.
Please join me in signing this petition to protect and champion the right to read for every student. Let's advocate for a future where our school libraries are abundant with stories that embrace and empower all students. Sign this petition today and let your voice be heard!
