Protect 86 ha of Lakeshore Land Adjacent to Darlington Provincial Park

Protect 86 ha of Lakeshore Land Adjacent to Darlington Provincial Park
The Issue
As a resident of Courtice, in Clarington, Ontario, I along with other community members, find ourselves devoid of proper access to the magnificent 35km of shoreline that Clarington has been blessed with. We live within a stone's throw of Lake Ontario, yet a nuclear station, cement pit, and mill limits our access to the shoreline; a sewage treatment plant and waste energy incinerator further mar our landscape. We are saddened that there are no significant municipal parks along the lakeshore in Clarington.
Now, we have set our hopes on a vast expanse of 86 hectares of lakeshore land, east of and next to Darlington Provincial Park. It is the last undeveloped parcel of this kind anywhere in GTHA. We hope it can become a municipal lakeshore park rather than falling prey to subdivisions, commercial areas, or a casino.
We ask the governmental authorities, Municipal, Federal or Provincial, to step up and protect this land. It could be our municipal lakeshore park, a haven for nature and recreation. From a broader aspect, such an initiative would also greatly contribute to the protection and conservation of Lake Ontario's shoreline. It will also provide a respite and key recreational area for our population as it continues to grow wildly over the next 10-20 years.
The municipality sees an opportunity to cash in and get enough money from development to develop a small 16ha park (initially 18...) instead of pushing higher levels of government to provide something significant to the community that hosts a significant nuclear generation facility with more being built, as well as a waste-to-energy incinerator that services a large area, and sewage treatment facitlity that also serves a large area.
Together, let's prevent what could be a total tragedy for our community and future generations. In 20 years we will wish that we had protected this land from development. Even if the land is only developed in a rudimentary way as a park, let's protect our lakefront. Sign our petition. Save this land.
