Prosecute the Officer Who Shot 19-Year-Old Nathaniel Fejerang in the Head
The Issue
Nathaniel “Nate” Fejerang was 19 years old when a Chicago police officer shot him in the back of the head while he was face down on the ground.
Newly released bodycam footage shows the moments leading up to Nate’s death. It captures a chaotic scene, a struggle on the ground, and then three gunshots—fired by Officer Oscar Asilis. One officer is heard saying on the radio, “Shots fired at the police by the police,” highlighting the confusion and lack of clarity in the incident. Police claimed Nate fired first, but the video does not clearly show who fired the initial shot. It also remains unclear why Nate was stopped by police in the first place.
Nate was not a suspect. He was a teenager hanging out near his home in West Humboldt Park, in a neighborhood where he was well known and deeply loved. He had survived a previous shooting that left a bullet lodged in his brain. He was a son, a brother, a friend—described by his family as kind, playful, and protective of his younger siblings. Now, those siblings are left with grief and trauma, and a mother is left without answers.
Despite national attention and growing public outrage, the officer who killed Nate has not been charged. He remains on administrative duty. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has not confirmed who fired the first shot, nor has it released a full explanation of what led to Nate’s killing.
This is not accountability. A young man is dead, and a family is being asked to wait in silence. We are demanding that Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx prosecute Officer Oscar Asilis for the killing of Nathaniel Fejerang. We are also demanding full transparency from COPA and a clear public explanation of what occurred that night.
Justice cannot wait. Not for Nate. Not for his family. Not for the community he was taken from.
Sign this petition to demand charges, demand answers, and demand justice for Nathaniel Fejerang.
