A dog in Charlotte County, Florida cannot describe what happened to it, but home surveillance footage reportedly did: investigators say the video shows a woman engaging in sexual activity with the family pet. The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office arrested Malia Elizabeth Nummerdor, 38, on a second-degree felony charge of sexual activity involving animals after a tip from social media led detectives to sworn statements and digital evidence.

Sheriff Bill Prummell did not mince words, calling the alleged conduct something he "cannot comprehend" and adding that "no animal should ever be subjected to this kind of conduct." Florida law already treats this crime as a felony, but felony charges only matter if they are prosecuted fully and the animal victim is protected afterward.

This petition calls on the Charlotte County State Attorney's Office to pursue the maximum available charge in this case and to ensure the dog is placed in permanent, safe care away from the household where the alleged abuse occurred. It also calls for continued support of law enforcement's willingness to act quickly on credible tips, since this case only came to light because someone spoke up.

Animals cannot testify, hire lawyers, or ask for protection. When evidence like this exists, the legal system is the only voice they have. A serious felony charge deserves a serious prosecution and a safe outcome for the victim at the center of it.
