Proposed Vat Increase

The Issue

PETITION TO OPPOSE THE VAT INCREASE AND PROTECT SOUTH AFRICA’S POOREST CITIZENS

To: The President of South Africa, The Minister of Finance, and The Parliament of South Africa

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern regarding the proposed VAT increase and its devastating impact on South Africa’s most vulnerable communities.

Reasons for Our Opposition:

 1. Increased Financial Burden on the Poor – The VAT increase will disproportionately affect low-income households that already struggle to afford basic necessities.

 2. Higher Cost of Living – Many essential items, including hygiene products, transportation, and certain food items, will become even more expensive, making daily survival more difficult for millions.

 3. Job Losses and Economic Hardship – Businesses facing reduced consumer spending may cut jobs or slow hiring, worsening unemployment and poverty.

 4. Widening Inequality – The increase will deepen the gap between the wealthy and the poor, further marginalizing the most vulnerable in our society.

 5. Failure to Address Root Causes – Instead of increasing VAT, the government should prioritize cutting wasteful expenditure, eliminating corruption, and implementing tax reforms that place a greater burden on those who can afford it.

Our Demands:

We urge the government to take the following immediate actions:

 1. Reverse the VAT Increase – Find alternative means of generating revenue without disproportionately burdening the poor.

 2. Expand VAT-Free Items – Increase the list of zero-rated essential goods and hygiene products to cushion low-income families.

 3. Strengthen Social Relief Measures – Increase social grants and introduce targeted subsidies to help those most affected.

 4. Combat Corruption and Wasteful Expenditure – Reallocate funds by cutting unnecessary government spending and holding corrupt officials accountable.

 5. Implement Pro-Poor Economic Policies – Focus on job creation, support for small businesses, and programs that uplift struggling communities.
