Proposed Law: Accountability for Malicious Misinformation and Coercive Online Conduct

Proposed Law: Accountability for Malicious Misinformation and Coercive Online Conduct
The Issue
🛑Enough Is Enough: Stop the Weaponisation of False Information on Social Media.
In today’s digital age, lies travel faster than truth and the consequences are devastating.
Social media and online platforms has become a modern-day weapon. False information is being used to manipulate public opinion, incite hatred, and inflict real violent harm on innocent communities. This deliberate spread of misinformation fuels division, fear, and violence, and it has gone on for far too long. We must act now to protect our future.
Why This Matters
What was once a space for connection and creativity has turned toxic.
Our feeds, once filled with updates from friends, are now flooded with harmful propaganda, distorted truths, and algorithm-driven outrage. These platforms prioritise engagement over integrity, amplifying hate and misinformation while silencing authentic voices.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and countless studies have linked the rise in hate crimes directly to online disinformation and demonisation by public figures and influencers. Yet, there is still no enforceable legislation to hold those responsible to account.
We cannot allow misinformation to continue destroying trust, safety, and unity within our communities.
We Call on the Government to Introduce Strong, Enforceable Legislation That:
- Criminalises the deliberate spread of false information or accusations that incite hate, discrimination, or violence, whether from individuals, influencers, politicians, or media figures.
- Treats each verified falsehood as a separate offence, ensuring accountability for repeated acts of digital harm.
- Requires mandatory fact-checking systems for social media platforms, ensuring flagged content is verified and corrected promptly.
- Implements national media literacy initiatives to educate the public on how to identify and resist manipulation online.
- Holds platforms fully accountable for the harm caused by their algorithms and the content they amplify.
This Is a Call for Unity, Respect, and Accountability
This is not about censorship, it’s about justice, truth, and safety.
When voices of influence use their platforms to twist facts or spread hate, we have a duty to act. We must protect our communities, not silence debate, but safeguard truth.
Social media companies must be held to the same standards of responsibility as workplaces and broadcasters. If they profit from harmful content and fail to act, they are complicit in the damage it causes.
Join the Movement #DigitalSilenceDay
To show collective strength, we propose #DigitalSilenceDay — a peaceful, 24-hour boycott of all social media activity.
6 of May 2026
Visibility: A sharp drop in engagement sends a clear message to governments, advertisers, and platforms. Just before election as a final reminder to vote responsibly.
Disruption: Algorithms thrive on constant interaction, our silence will break their rhythm.
Unity: A simple, powerful act of solidarity without confrontation.
Together, We Can Reclaim the Digital Space
This is our chance to demand a safer, more truthful online world, one that values integrity over influence.
By standing together, we can reshape the digital future into one that protects rather than divides.
We urge to sign the petition. Share it widely. Let’s build a society where truth matters again.
