Today I met with several representatives from Taseko Mining Corp.
They were very friendly, pleasant, and nice to talk to. They are local residents, living around Kamloops and one of them even has a cabin near Green Lake.
They underlined that this is the initial phase of the planning and there is potential room to move, however, BC Hydro is heavily set on 100 Mile House being the connection point. They do not want to have it connected to the 500kV Mica Creek line because (supposedly) it would risk their line feeding into Vancouver, as well as to the US when they have extra power.
The 100 Mile House sub station is a seperate, already lower voltage station so they are not as concerned about it being an issue.
Having said that, one thing I was able to find out that is not being discussed openly by anyone, is that this little sub-station is becoming very popular. The local Enbridge compressor station needs another compressor to deal with the demand and it needs to be an electric compressor station for Enbridge to maintain their status as a "green" company. This means more power demand on 100 Mile, which is likely why we have a proposed wind farm in the vicinity.
Anyways, it looks like unless the natives oppose the mine, it likely will be pushed through and so will the power line. So we, as affected residents, need to give Taseko alternate options for routing or some other solution. Fully opposing it does not seem feasible, unless we fully oppose the mine as well.
I'm still waiting to hear back from BC Hydro to confirm this, and I seriously urge all of you to contact Taseko Mining if you are going to be even remotely affected by this and express your concerns and objections. Let's see if we can have this be less impactful to our communities. Please contact:
