Proposed 40-50 home subdivision on Hokaday rd/412. Help our concerns be heard! All we need is your signature!
The Issue
A developer from Mandeville has bought over 100 acres in our small country town of Slaughter, that expands from 412 all the way to Hokaday Road and has submitted a plat for 30 to 50 homes on this acreage . City Council and police jury have mishandled this situation from the beginning, by not properly disclosing information to the public and putting up proper signage to allow citizens enough notice of planning and zoning meetings. I’m reaching out to the public, not just as a concerned citizen, but as a directly impacted neighbor on a peaceful, country dirt and gravel road. A new development is being proposed near my home which threatens to disrupt not only the tranquility we cherish but poses significant risks to our community.
The proposed development will inevitably lead to increased flooding—something that has been a growing concern here. My own yard and our community road are already at risk, and with the addition of this new project, the situation would likely worsen. This isn’t just about my personal inconvenience; it's about maintaining the safety and integrity of our entire neighborhood.
Our small community, characterized by its quaint roads and rural charm, stands to lose much of what makes it special. We enjoy a quiet environment that allows us and the natural surroundings to flourish. Introducing a new development will not only disturb this balance but bring about heavy traffic and environmental stress that our current infrastructure is not equipped to handle.
I urge the decision-makers to consider the environmental impact study results that show significant adverse effects from the increased runoff and disruption to the local ecosystem. These are not speculative concerns; studies from similar projects have resulted in negative impacts like flooding and habitat destruction. We must learn from these mistakes and take a stand before it’s too late.
Moreover, our community will need substantial upgrades in public amenities and services to accommodate any increase in population—an expense undoubtedly shouldered by local taxpayers. The burden should not fall on us when the primary beneficiaries are outside investors.
To preserve our community's character and protect it from foreseeable harm, I’m asking you to join me in opposing this development without first making upgrades to our drainage system and flooding roads. Your signature can help show our local representatives that we stand united and will actively resist changes detrimental to our serene lifestyle.
