Proposal for Renaming & Restructuring of Arunachal Pradesh

The Issue

We the people of Arunachal stand at a critical juncture in the history of our beloved state, Arunachal Pradesh. Our land, often referred to as the "land of dawn-lit mountains," (although beautiful) carries a name derived from Sanskrit—a language that, while rich in history, does not reflect the diverse and vibrant cultures of our indigenous peoples. This petition is a call to action for a name change that honors our true heritage, respects our cultural diversity, and reflects the unique identity of our region.

"Arunachal Pradesh" is a name that resonates with beauty, yet it fails to capture the essence of who we are. It is a name imposed during a time when the rich tapestry of our indigenous cultures was overlooked. Our state is home to over 26 major tribes and numerous sub-tribes, each with a distinct language, culture, and way of life. The current name does not do justice to the rich histories, traditions, and stories that make up the fabric of our society.

Our Proposal: Monyul & Tanimoko

We propose renaming our state to "Monyul & Tanimoko," names deeply rooted in the cultural and historical contexts of our major indigenous communities. "Monyul" historically refers to the Monpa region and represents the rich cultural heritage of the Monpa, Sherdukpen, Memba, and other related groups. "Tanimoko," combining the Tani term with "Moko" (land), honors the significant Tani-speaking population, which includes the Nyishi, Apatani, Galo, Tagin, and other Tani tribes.

These names are not just symbolic; they are a reclamation of our narrative, a celebration of our languages, and a recognition of our unique cultural heritage. They speak to the spirit of our people, who have long cherished their traditions and languages despite external influences.

Honoring Our Diverse Communities

Another rationale for this change is because in all reality, Our state is not home to over 26 major tribes and numerous sub-tribes, as claimed. In most census the same tribes like nyisis, or Hrussos are repeated multiple times, and no official could ever name all the 26 articulately. Yes, however we do recognise that each tribe has their own unique cultural heritage and linguistic diversity- and everyone should respect that. The Tani groups, the majority ethnic in Arunachal, which include the Nyishi, Apatani, Galo, Tagin, and others, represent a significant portion of our population. The Monpa people, alongside Sherdukpen, Memba, and others, also form a vital cultural and demographic block. Smaller communities, such as the Mishmi, Khamti, Singpho, and Deori, though fewer in number, contribute richly to our cultural landscape .

We therefore propose that these smaller communities be recognized with special administrative arrangements, such as autonomous councils, to honor their unique identities and ensure their voices are heard. For the Naga people, we propose a respectful dialogue to consider their desires, whether they wish to remain part of our state or join Nagaland, respecting their historical and cultural ties.

Why This Change Matters: A Call to Reclaim Our Identity

Names are powerful; they carry the weight of identity and belonging. For too long, the name "Arunachal Pradesh" has stood as a symbol of an imposed identity, overshadowing the voices and cultures of our indigenous peoples. By renaming our state to "Monyul & Tanimoko," we are not merely changing a label but reclaiming our narrative. We are asserting that our stories, languages, and traditions matter. We are declaring that our cultural identity deserves recognition and respect.

This change is not just about honoring our past; it's about shaping our future. It’s about ensuring that our children grow up with a name that reflects their heritage, that they can proudly claim as their own. It's about fostering a sense of pride and unity among our diverse communities.

Call to Action: Join Us in Making History

We call upon the government, civil society, and all citizens to support this movement. Let us come together to create a future where our state's name reflects the rich diversity and unique heritage of its people. Let us honor our ancestors, celebrate our cultures, and embrace a name that truly belongs to us.

Sign this petition to support the renaming of Arunachal Pradesh to Monyul & Tanimoko. Together, we can make history and pave the way for a more inclusive and culturally resonant future.

This is more than just a name change; it is a movement towards reclaiming our identity and celebrating our heritage. It is about ensuring that every community in our state feels recognized, respected, and proud of our shared home. By signing this petition, you are joining us in a journey towards a brighter, more inclusive future.

Thank you for your support.
