Proposal for Broader Recognition of Religious and Cultural Festivals in Massachusetts

Proposal for Broader Recognition of Religious and Cultural Festivals in Massachusetts
The Issue
We, the undersigned writing on behalf of the diverse and vibrant communities in Massachusetts to advocate for greater recognition and inclusivity of religious and cultural festivals and recognizing them for official holidays of Massachusetts State. These holidays hold profound significance for various faith communities across our state.
The recent proposal to designate Diwali, an important festival for Hindu families, as a state holiday is a nice step toward honoring cultural diversity. This initiative, however, also presents an opportunity to broaden the discussion and consider recognizing other significant festivals celebrated by our multicultural population.
Below is a list of some key festivals celebrated by various faith communities in Massachusetts:
- Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Ramadan(Holy month): Celebrated by the Muslim community
- Guru Nanak Jayanti and Baisakhi: Celebrated by the Sikh community
- Ugadi, Onam, Dussehra, Diwali : Holidays celebrated by the Hindu community
- Mahavir Jayanti: Celebrated by the Jain community
- Buddha Jayanti: Celebrated by the Buddhist community
- Good Friday, Easter Monday, All Souls’ Day : Celebrated by the Christian community
- Chhath Puja: Celebrated by many within the Hindu and Sikh communities
While this list is not exhaustive, it highlights the richness of our state’s cultural and religious fabric. Recognizing such festivals as state holidays or observances not only fosters inclusivity but also acknowledges the significant contributions of these communities to the social, cultural, and economic vitality of Massachusetts.
We respectfully urge policy makers to consider engaging in broader dialogue and collaboration with representatives from various faith communities to ensure that these cherished traditions are appropriately recognized to include multiple faith groups. Such actions would be a meaningful step toward celebrating the shared diversity that defines our state.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your support in fostering a more inclusive Massachusetts.
