This betta fish is currently in a small glass vase with a large plant above it. There are many ways we can improve the living situation of this fish to give it a higher quality of life.  The human equivalent of this would likely be a slightly messy closet, which nobody would want to live their whole lives in. So how do we fix this? the first step would be to identify what could be done differently.  The main concerns I have are the lack of filtration, risks of stress, and the aquarium setup.

Without a filter, bettas are put at high risk of ammonia. Ammonia can be caused by a buildup of food and fecal matter. This is easily preventable with the right filter as an aquarium filter will allow beneficial bacteria that kills off the ammonia to grow. Another reason why a filter will be beneficial is simply convenience. Without a filter the tank will get dirty very quickly and easily. A filter can prevent this leading to a cleaner tank and less time out of its caretakers' days from cleaning. There are many types of filters to choose from, but for a betta fish there's only one option that stands above the others. This would be a sponge filter. Choosing the wrong filter can be harmful for the fish and in some cases cause death. 

Bettas are very tough fish, but they can still get stressed in certain conditions. One common stressor for a betta fish is their environment, in this case, the vase. The vase this fish is currently in is circular, which can cause for distortion in the fish's vision. From inside the vase, everything surrounding the fish looks like stretched out blobs. This can cause the fish much stress and, in some cases, lead to blindness. A way to prevent this would be to find a square or rectangular aquarium, which does not distort vision. Another stressor for this fish would be the lack of swimming room.  Fish are very active creatures, especially bettas. In just one minute, a betta in a 10-gallon tank will have swam around the entire aquarium multiple times. This fish does not have the means to get its exercise in and do that. The fish has very little space to move at all which can stress it out due to claustrophobia. 

The current setup is great for a plant, but not for any living being. Ideally the fish would be living in a 5-20 gallon wide (not tall) aquarium with sand or naturally colored gravel, live plants, a sponge filter, a small aquarium heater, and a fish hammock. This will cost money, that is unavoidable. However, I'm willing to raise the money to get this fish proper care. If the school does not want to take the time and effort to give the fish what it needs, I have a good friend who is more than willing to take it in to give it the best quality of life possible.
