The Issue

As a concerned citizen, I am personally touched by the need for protective measures for infants born into circumstances where they may not be able to be adequately cared for. It's a harsh reality that not all parents are prepared for the responsibilities that come with a child. At times, this may lead to tragic outcomes that could be prevented with appropriate safe spaces, such as Safe Haven Baby Boxes.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide an option for desperate parents who can't keep their babies, as well as helps combat incidences related to postpartum depression. They permit parents to surrender their infants without facing legal repercussions, thereby potentially saving a life. According to the Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization, since the launch in 2016, there have been no reported fatalities of infants abandoned in these boxes. The stark contrast to the average 150 annually abandoned infants, as cited by the Department of Health and Human Services, validates the effectiveness of these boxes.

Our town, police officers, and fire department must consider the installation of these Safe Haven Baby Boxes. Every baby deserves a safe space. It is our moral obligation to provide that. Please sign this petition to advocate for the installation of Safe Haven Baby Boxes in our community to save the lives of innocent newborns.

I serve on the local school board. I believe the decision makers on this proposal would be our township trustees as we only oversee school district policy and position function of our Superintendent and Treasurer. Township Trustees oversee the police, fire, and township administrative departments. Thank you, Deborah Gray GLSD Board of Education
