The Issue

Our children attend the Hatcham Primary, and we've frequently witnessed or experienced frightening near-misses involving traffic during pick-up and drop-off.

The streets surrounding our school lack adequate safety features for pedestrians which can lead to potentially dangerous situations. If nothing changes, an accident seems inevitable.

Statistics highlight the need for change:
Road collisions remain one of the main causes of premature death among children and young people aged 0-15, with 35% of child pedestrians killed or seriously injured during ‘school run’ times of day.
(source: Public Health England).

Our children shouldn't become part of these sobering statistics, and we must act now to secure their safety on their way to school.

Just 25% of pupils in Inner London are driven to school (source: Solve the School Run- and it should safe for them to be dropped off and picked up without compromising the safety of pupils arriving by other means.

We are urging the local council to implement measures to improve the safety on the streets around the school.

These measures could include:

  • Painting / repainting road markings around the school
  • A designated zebra crossing near the main school gates on Monson Road and main entrance on Hunsdon Road
  • Installing cameras to discourage illegal or dangerous driving, particularly the one-way system on Hunsdon Rd.
  • Road furniture to prevent parking on pavement
  • Designated parking for stress-free drop-offs
  • Approving a School Street around the school
  • Encourage active travel initiatives such as walking school buses, and Walk to School month
  • Identify local Park and Stride locations 5-10 mins walk away from the school
  • Other measures that address dangerous driving and improve safety for pedestrians and children and parents who cycle to school.

Please sign this petition to make safer streets a reality around Hatcham Primary.
