Promote Regular Diabetes Check-ups and Healthy Nutrition for Prevention

The Issue

Diabetes, a chronic disease characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood, affects over 500 million people worldwide, in reality, this number would be larger as many people would have diabetes but would not be recognised. It requires thorough awareness and deliberate preventive measures to manage. This petition aims to address the importance of regular glucose level checks and a balanced diet, especially for individuals at risk. The American Diabetes Association recommends annual screening for all adults beyond 45 years or for those who fall under specific risk factors. Checking blood glucose levels (fasting) minimally two times a year can provide early detection. Early detection plays a crucial role in preventing prediabetic individuals from advancing to more severe diabetes stages. Besides, adopting a diet plan designed to manage diabetes can greatly reduce the impact of the disorder on individuals and improve their overall health. Through public efforts and government interventions, we can make the changes necessary. We urge everyone to sign this petition to emphasize the importance of glucose level checks and balanced diet to prevent and manage diabetes effectively.

Diet plan for diabetes

What is type 2 diabetes and why is diet important in managing it?
Type 2 diabetes develops as a result of the body's problem in regulating and utilising sugar properly. It causes high blood sugar levels which are not good for the circulatory, nervous and immune systems. In it, there are two problems. First, the pancreas produces only a small amount of insulin, a hormone that converts sugar to be stored in the cells. And secondly, the cells have resistance in responding to the insulin produced. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2023)

As diabetes causes high blood sugar levels, a healthy diet aimed at maintaining lower blood glucose levels is important for managing diabetes. The diet should contain foods with a low glycemic index (GI) which are digested and absorbed by the body slowly, these foods do not create a rapid increase in the blood sugar level but they cause a gradual rise in blood sugar level, allowing the person to live with less insulin.

 An affordable diet plan

An Alternate
If you do not have foods mentioned in the following diet plan you can create your meal on the following concept.

·        Take a normal-sized plate and fill it in half with non-starchy vegetables. These vegetables include carrots, cabbage, celery, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, etc.

·        Now fill a quarter with low-fat protein foods like chicken, eggs, cheese, fish and plant-based sources of proteins such as beans and nuts.

·        The last quarter can be filled with carbohydrate foods such as whole grains including brown rice, oatmeal and popcorn. Dairy products, fruits and starchy vegetables can also come in this category.

·        The last thing is a drink. Water is the perfect option because a zero-calorie drink is needed. However, you can add other zero-calorie drinks too, for example, unsweetened tea and coffee and diet drinks (American Diabetes Association, 2020).
