Promote Pride Month Support in Businesses

Promote Pride Month Support in Businesses
The Issue
We call upon Kamala Harris, as Vice President of the United States and current Democratic presidential nominee, to encourage corporate America to elevate their support for the observance of Pride Month, which takes place every June across the country. This involves adopting an active role in fostering the sales of Pride Month merchandise, leading advocacy campaigns, and projecting more visible gestures of solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community. According to a report from Gallup, an estimated 5.6% of U.S adults identify as LGBT – that is around 18 million people who need to see themselves represented and supported in all aspects of American life, including in business (Source: Gallup). The buying power of the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. is estimated to be around $1 trillion annually. This significant economic influence underscores the importance of recognizing and supporting LGBTQ+ consumers, not just during Pride Month but throughout the year. A survey conducted by Accenture found that 83% of LGBTQ+ individuals and 70% of allies are more likely to purchase from companies that support LGBTQ+ equality. This means that companies that actively engage in and support the LGBTQ+ community can enhance their brand loyalty and attract a broader customer base. Representation in media and business plays a critical role in the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth who have at least one accepting adult in their lives are 40% less likely to attempt suicide. When businesses actively represent and support the LGBTQ+ community, it helps to create a more inclusive environment that can significantly impact lives. A report by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) found that 46% of LGBTQ+ workers are closeted at work, fearing discrimination or judgment. By fostering an inclusive culture that extends beyond Pride Month, companies can contribute to a safer and more welcoming workplace for LGBTQ+ employees. The wholehearted and full-throated endorsements of Pride Month by companies not only amplify the core message of inclusivity and accepting diversity but also has potential positive impacts on the brand image and customer loyalty. We hope and trust that Vice President Harris, with her proven commitment to equality and justice, can lead this change. We petition for this change not only in June but all year round. Let's use our voices to influence this important cause; please sign this petition.
