The issue

Mental health refers to a person's emotional and social well being. It affects the way people think, feel, and act in their everyday lives. Good mental health helps people cope with stress, build relationships, and make decisions. However, when someone experiences poor mental health, conditions such as anxiety and depression can make daily life more difficult. Mental health is an important part of overall well being and can affect many different areas of a person's life.

There are many factors that can contribute to poor mental health. One major cause is pressure from school and work, which can create stress or feel overwhelming. Bullying and cyber bullying can also have a negative impact on a person's confidence and emotional well being. Social media can increase feelings of comparison, anxiety, and pressure to have a 'perfect' image online. Family problems, trauma, loneliness, and ongoing stress can also contribute to mental health challenges. In many cases, mental health issues are caused by multiple different factors rather than just one.

Mental health issues can affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. However, teenagers and young adults are often heavily impacted because of school pressure, social expectations, and major life changes. Mental health can also affect families, friends, and communities because it influences relationships and the way people interact with others. When someone struggles with their mental health, the effects can often be felt by the people around them as well.

Mental health issues have existed for a long time, but awareness of them has increased in recent decades. More people are now talking openly about mental health, and there is a greater understanding of the importance of seeking help. Many reports have shown that mental health problems became more common during and after the COVID-19 pandemic due to isolation, uncertainty, and increased stress. Mental health issues occur all around the world, but they can be worse in places where support services are limited.

Mental health problems can have both short-term and long-term effects. In the short term, people may feel stressed, worried, anxious, or overwhelmed. They may find it difficult to concentrate at school, experience changes in mood, struggle to sleep, or withdraw from friends and activities they normally enjoy. In the long term, untreated mental health issues can lead to ongoing conditions such as anxiety and depression. They can also affect school performance, relationships, future employment opportunities, and overall quality of life.

There are many ways mental health issues can be prevented or managed. Raising awareness and educating people about mental health can help reduce shame and encourage understanding. It is important to create supportive environments where people feel comfortable talking about their feelings and asking for help. Access to counselors, psychologists, and other mental health services is also important. In addition, healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and working on your self care can help improve mental well being.

I chose mental health as my issue because it affects many people, especially teenagers and young adults. Mental health can impact how people think, feel, and act, and it can affect many areas of their lives, including school, relationships, and physical health. It is an issue that can affect anyone, regardless of their age or background. I believe it is important to raise awareness about mental health because it encourages people to seek help when they need it. By educating others about mental health, we can create a more supportive and understanding community.

Mental health is a significant issue in Australia. Research shows that roughly 8.5 million Australians aged 16–85, which is around 43% of the population, have experienced a mental illness at some point in their lives. Around 26% of Australians aged 15 and over experienced a mental illness during 2022–2023. In addition, around 14% of children and adolescents aged 4–17 are affected by a mental health condition. Anxiety disorders are the most common, affecting around 17% of the population, followed by effective disorders and substance use disorders.

To raise awareness about this issue, my campaign will use two main strategies. The first strategy is creating an online petition that allows people to show their support for improving mental health awareness and access to support services. This will help spread awareness and encourage people to get involved in the campaign.

The second strategy is creating a social media account that shares positive and educational content about mental health. The account will post facts, statistics, helpful information, and encouraging messages. This will help educate people about mental health and encourage them to seek support if they need it. Social media also allows information to be shared quickly, helping the campaign reach a wider audience beyond the school community.

Together, these strategies will help increase awareness, encourage participation, and promote more open and positive conversations about mental health.
