Promote Gun Violence Awareness & Prevention in Schools, Workplaces, and Communities in NJ
The Issue
Hello, I’m currently a student at Montclair State University. In one of my classes, my professor introduced us to a project with topics to choose from. I chose Gun Violence as it is something I’ve been vocal about prior to working on the topic. We were tasked to come up with demands and what can we do to help the issue. I recognize that New Jersey already is one of the states in the U.S. with the strictest laws, but it's not uncommon for someone to not know their rights and laws that could save them from potential risk. This is why we need to strengthen some of those policies and inform citizens about the importance of Gun violence awareness and prevention.
Gun violence affects all areas and everyone in NJ, mostly those who live in areas with higher crime rates. In schools, students and teachers are at risk of potential violence, while workplaces face safety concerns that can lead to traumatic experiences for the employees. Families and entire communities live in constant fear, and individuals suffering from untreated mental health issues may resort to violent acts. In New Jersey, approximately 468 people die annually due to gun violence based on recent data. This figure includes about 235 homicides and 229 suicides, with a smaller number resulting from other causes. Among these, an average of 36 children and teens die each year due to firearms, primarily from homicides. State Data
Even though New Jersey has one of the lowest gun death rates in the United States, the impact remains very significant. If action is not taken, the cycle of gun violence will continue to affect lives, destabilizing communities, and creating fear and trauma in schools and workplaces. The lack of effective education, training, and outreach will leave individuals unprepared to prevent or respond to these situations. In schools, failure to integrate gun violence prevention/awareness education risks exposing future generations to avoidable tragedies. Workplaces, especially those in high-risk areas, will continue to be vulnerable, affecting productivity and employee morale. Community outreach programs are critical in creating a culture of safety, but without funding and institutional support, they will remain insufficient. On the other hand, proactive measures like training, education, and these programs can reduce the number of incidents and lead to a more informed and prepared society.
The urgency for action is clearer than ever. Gun violence has become an epidemic, affecting communities, workplaces, and schools across the nation. In the wake of tragic events, such as the many mass shootings in recent years, public demand for effective gun violence prevention programs has increased. Now is the time to make that change before another tragedy strikes. Proactive intervention through workplace training, school education, and community outreach is not only necessary but vitally important for creating safer environments. Immediate action can prevent future loss of life, reduce trauma, and help ensure that schools, workplaces, and communities are equipped to respond to violence and prevent it where possible.
With these petition signatures, it is something for whoever wants to help and I to present to local school boards, advocating for curriculum changes that include gun violence awareness and prevention. Submit the petition to local and state representatives, urging them to introduce or support policies requiring schools and workplaces to incorporate education on this topic. Employees themselves can approach HR departments or leadership teams in companies to encourage inclusion of gun violence awareness in employee training programs.
Gun violence affects us all, and education is a powerful tool to drive awareness, prevention, and change. By supporting this petition, you are taking a stand for safer communities and a better-informed generation.
