I am currently trying to get an emotional support gecko but cannot take him to university as the university only allows support dogs. Living with autism, I find dogs to be the opposite of therapeutic and helpful. In contrast, my gecko, Groot, provides the soothing presence I need to manage overstimulation and everyday life. His care, which involves repetitive actions, helps me focus and regain my composure in overwhelming situations.

Emotional support animals (ESAs) like Groot play a critical role in the lives of individuals with mental health challenges, providing comfort, companionship, and relief from stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, many institutions, including universities, limit the definition of support animals to dogs, thus excluding countless individuals from receiving the personalized care and support that their unique ESA can provide.

Recognizing ESAs by giving them the same rights as support dogs is not just about fairness; it's about creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Current regulations around support animals can be restrictive and discriminatory, failing to consider the diverse needs of people with disabilities. Expanding ESA rights would ensure that individuals who, like me, rely on non-traditional support animals can access educational, housing, and public spaces without unnecessary barriers.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that ESAs significantly improve the mental health of their owners by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Moreover, according to a survey conducted by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, 74% of pet owners reported improvements in their mental health from owning a pet. By formalizing equal rights for ESAs, educational institutions can lead the way in promoting mental health and well-being by acknowledging and validating the therapeutic impact of these animals.

We urge educational institutions, regulatory bodies, and policymakers to revise current laws and frameworks to ensure that all emotional support animals receive equal recognition and accommodation as support dogs. This change would reflect a deeper understanding and commitment to mental health support and inclusivity.

Please help us create more inclusive and fair policies that accommodate the needs of all individuals requiring emotional support and companionship. Sign this petition to advocate for giving emotional support animals the same rights as support dogs.
