Promote Environmental Change to Avoid Health Concerns of Informal Settlers in Manila

The Issue

Manila is one of the most populated cities in the Philippines. It is home to approximately 14.7 million Manileños in 2023 covering 42.34 km^2 of the Philippines. Not only that, it is also a setting place for a number of commercial buildings and infrastructures. However, behind these extravagant attestations resides poverty and pollution.

There are various factors in Manila that can affect both the environment and population. It is a known knowledge that one usually affects the other. As an example, air pollution caused by fossil fuels which are used by the people. Connectedly, air pollution is one of the most rising cause of death rate not only in Manila, but around the globe. The city is infamous for being infamous for having a dense popularity which may cause a certain number of problems for their health and the environment. According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), people who live in urban slums results a high death rate in 2015. Additionally, people who live in overcrowded areas, such as Manila, are more vulnerable to infectious disease, such as Tuberculosis (Ocha, 2023).

This petition calls for an environmental change. In a small, close-knit local community, residents are witnessing a disturbing trend: an alarming increase in the death rate among people who live in overpopulated areas. These people are succumbing to various health concerns directly linked to environmental factors, such as pollution, poor water quality, and lack of access to quality healthcare.

The petition aims to, first, share awareness regarding the topic to educate the community about the dangers posed by various environmental factors caused by mankind. Second, reach out to health and environmental experts to provide sufficient findings and informational talks for the people. Third, we aim to reach government officials in the residing are for possible enforcement of guidelines that may improve the people’s quality of living. Fourth, we sought to invite a number of healthcare workers for medical missions.

We should be mindful of the high vulnerability rate of the people in Manila. Be concerned for your fellow people.
