Promote data centers away from valuable farmland

Promote data centers away from valuable farmland
The Issue
In recent years, the development of data centers has skyrocketed due to increasing digital demands. These facilities are crucial in supporting our growing technological infrastructure, enabling everything from cloud computing to streaming and electronic communications. However, the exponential growth has led to a concerning trend: the encroachment of data centers onto our precious farmland.
Let's be clear: data centers are not the enemy. They are essential to our modern life, but the location of these developments needs careful planning and consideration. Farmland is not just a piece of land; it's where our food comes from. It supports farmers' livelihoods, maintains ecological balance, and ensures food security. Once it's converted into industrial use, this loss is irreversible, affecting not just our generation but those of the future as well.
This petition calls for responsible planning in the placement of new data centers—keeping them off agricultural land. We can find alternative sites that fulfill infrastructural needs without sacrificing our farms. Urban areas, brownfield sites, and regions with less arable land can all be considered for new developments. This approach not only preserves our farmland but also utilizes areas that might otherwise remain underdeveloped.
By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to a balanced approach that allows for both technological advancement and agricultural protection. Let us urge policymakers to prioritize what truly matters: the sustainability of our environment and our food systems. We don't need a ban on data centers; we need a commitment to strategic planning that honors and preserves our farmland.
Your signature on this petition signifies support for responsible data center development and a promising future where technology and agriculture coexist harmoniously. Join us in making a meaningful impact for generations to come. Sign today and safeguard our farmland.
A little about our fight
We are currently litigating to stop "Project Spring"—a massive, Google-backed data center campus that threatens 800+ acres of our heritage. Our fight is two-fold:
1. Holding the Land Accountable: We are supporting the Land Legacy lawsuit, which asserts that this development violates a long-standing conservation agreement and a $3.8 million federal commitment to keep this land agricultural.
2. Challenging the City’s Overreach: Through the Protect Sand Springs Alliance, we are suing to void the city's improper annexation of this land. We refuse to let the City of Sand Springs bypass legal procedures and ignore the voices of the rural neighbors who will bear the brunt of this industrialization.
Data centers belong in industrial zones, not on protected farmland. We are fighting to ensure our water, our soil, and our community's future are not traded away for corporate profit
