Project Animal Crossing

The Issue

Countless animals get hit every day by cars and reckless drivers. Hitting animals with cars is very dangerous, not only for the animals but also for our safety and the safety of our vehicles. Fortunately, we can help in many ways, such as driving slower on back roads, looking for animal crossing signs, and turning our high beams on at night. However, we won't know where to slow down or turn on our high beams if nothing is there to alert us to take these precautions.

Animal and car collision accidents are a widespread occurrence in Central Virginia, with a 1 in 74 chance of hitting an animal while driving. This makes Virginia the ninth most likely state for a driver to hit an animal. While these statistics are daunting, this is not entirely a lost cause, as there are several simple ways to avoid collisions. After considering several available solutions, we decided the simplest solution is to install more wildlife crossing signs. This can be done at sites where animals are known to live, such as two lane highways and highways that are in heavily wooded or mountainous areas. These signs can alert drivers to the dangers of the road they’re on and encourage them to take precautionary measures like driving slower and turning the car's high beams on.

Animal vehicle collisions pose a danger to us, our cars, and the animals we collide with. Fortunately, there are ways we can help; one of these is putting up wildlife crossing signs in locations where animals frequently cross. Please join us on our mission of making our roads, cars, animals, and ultimately our state safer by signing our petition to erect signposts across our state.
