Prohibit Violent Sex Offenders from Residing Near Schools and Public Parks
The Issue
Recently, I was drawn into an incident that left me staggered and alarmed. I confronted a two-time convicted child sex offender at Legion Park, who was sitting there watching children play. I had nearly recieved harassment charges for standing up for the safety of our kids. To my horror, I discovered this individual lived right opposite the park. Wisconsin has no laws against this; unless it is in city ordinance. They are currently facing charges unrelated to their previous offenses - showcasing a pattern of recurring violent predatory behavior.
This is not an isolated issue. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 63,000 children a year become victims of sexual abuse. This number is nightmarishly high and the danger is exceptionally close to home. Proximity to public centers like parks and schools should not be a privilege available to those charged or convicted of violent sexual offenses.
Our parks and schools should be safe spaces for our community and children, not hunting grounds for predators. Our laws need to reflect this belief. We must demand that the residences of violent sex offenders cannot be within a specific distance from places where children are likely to gather, like schools and parks.
Please, sign the petition and join us in creating an environment that fosters safety and peace of mind for our kids. Together, we can push for changes that keep our community safe.
