Prohibit unsupervised children under 9 at local skate parks

The Issue

As a dedicated skater who has spent countless hours at our local skate park, I have witnessed firsthand the dangers posed by young children skating without adult supervision. Recently, I suffered an injury to my shoulder while trying to avoid a group of unsupervised kids who were oblivious to the proper etiquette of the sport. These children often do not check if someone is already using the snake run before jumping in with their skateboards or scooters. Such incidents not only pose a risk of accidents but also disrupt the experience for other skaters.

Our community's skate parks should be a safe and enjoyable space for everyone, where skaters can focus on improving their skills without constantly having to worry about collisions or interruptions. When younger children are left to navigate the park on their own, it can become a chaotic environment, particularly when experienced skaters have limited time to enjoy their sessions.

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all park users, I propose that we enforce a new rule: no child under the age of 9 should be allowed at the skate park without a parent or guardian present. Furthermore, it is crucial that parents actively supervise their children and remove them from the bowls when other skaters are around, preventing potential accidents and allowing more experienced skaters uninterrupted time to practice.

This change is not only about safety, but also about fostering a respectful and inclusive skate park culture. By implementing this rule, we can educate younger children on the importance of respect, awareness, and turn-taking, essential elements of skate park etiquette, from an early age.

I urge our local council and skate park management to take immediate action to draft and enforce this rule. Implementing this policy will lead to a safer, more enjoyable environment for skaters of all ages and skill levels.

Please sign this petition to support creating a safer and more organized skate park for everyone. Together, we can make our community's recreational spaces more welcoming and secure.
