Prohibit Unnecessary Fireworks: Support Indoor Pets, Neurodiverse Individuals & Sensitive Persons
The Issue
As a neurodiverse individual, I experience considerable distress when fireworks—often unnecessary and excessively loud—are set off. It's not just me. I know several people who feel the same way, suffering due to the abrupt, jarring noise. Let's not forget our beloved pets. Can you imagine their distress, a distress so intense that it could result in large vet bills due to the mental trauma they endure?
The world is changing, and our practices need to change accordingly. We should not be celebrating things in a way that causes distress to others, especially when there are so many alternative means of celebration. According to the RSPCA, 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. The Humane Society of the United States also emphasizes the detrimental effects of fireworks on pets. Statistics reveal that more pets go missing during fireworks events than at any other time due to extreme fear and confusion (American Veterinary Medical Association).
Meanwhile, among humans, the NHS reports that sudden, loud noises can cause significant psychological distress for neurodiverse individuals and people with sensory issues. This only goes to affirm that our insistence on traditional, but avoidable, practises like fireworks is not only a public nuisance, but also a potential health risk.
It's time for change. Stand with us in asking for the prohibition of unnecessary fireworks to protect our pets and support those with sensory issues from undue distress. Together, we can make a difference for our community and our companions. Please sign this petition.
