As a concerned member of the Wyoming Area School District, I am deeply affected by the mandatory use of Yondr pouches in our schools. These pouches, which are designed to lock away students' phones during school hours, are causing anxiety for some of our pupils who require regular access to their devices for personal reasons or emergencies.

We recognize the intent behind the use of this technology - it can provide an environment that is free of digital distractions, aiding focus and concentration. However, the National Institute of Mental Health advises that a percentage of our students may be dealing with various forms of anxiety disorders. For many of these students, the constant access to their phone serves as a source of reassurance and comfort.

Priority should be given to the mental health of our students. In the pursuit of academic excellence, we should not overlook their emotional well-being. We propose alternative measures, such as strict phone use policies during class hours or designated phone-free zones.

We urge the Wyoming Area School District to reconsider the use of Yondr pouches. Allowing our students the freedom to have controlled access to their phones might not only reduce anxiety but also teach them responsibility towards utilizing technology.

Some students will also damage, cut open, vandalize and just altogether destroy these pouches. The school is wasting money they definitely do not have to waste.
