Prohibit the Use of Swastika on Clothing and Public Displays

The Issue

Alarmed by the recent actions of renowned artist, Kanye West, who incited potential harm by featuring the swastika symbol on a T-shirt, we find it necessary to address the pressing issue of how hate symbols are permitted and regarded in our society. Strikingly, this symbol, notoriously associated with antisemitism and hate, is being used in a context that promotes these very harmful elements, causing profound concern.

There is a delicate, and critical balancing act between free speech and the potential harm caused by hate symbols. This case is no exception. Remembering West's history of controversial remarks perceived as antisemitic, it is worrisome to think that this move signifies an attempt to provoke or disseminate harmful messages, rather than a mere cultural use of the symbol.

We are living in a time of escalating antisemitic incidents. According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents in the United States hit an all-time high in 2019. The same report pointed out that such hateful incidents have more than doubled since 2015. And since October 7th 2023, Antisemitic incidences have tripled! In less than two years there have been over 10,000 Antisemitic incidences reported to the police and FBI. Such data signifies the growing danger of antisemitism, and employing symbols associated with such hate merely adds fuel to the fire.

This petition calls for the government to critically examine, and subsequently ban the use of the Swastika symbol in contexts such as clothing and public displays, where it can serve to promote hate or antisemitism. Proaction must be taken to ensure that symbols associated with hate are not casually tossed around, contributing to a wider culture of discrimination and violence. Many countries have banned the public display of the swastika, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Russia, Belarus, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Ukraine.

Let’s stand together, make our voices be heard, and strive for a safer, more harmonious society. Please sign this petition now. Your signature could be the one that makes the government take note and act against this growing concern.
