I moved into a new build property in the UK in 2022 and was shocked to discover that turfing companies are using plastic netting to embed the soil to grow turf. This method, aimed at growing turf more efficiently by allowing it to be lifted sooner for sale, is creating an environmental hazard. It is not only endangering our current wildlife but also polluting our environment through plastic particles in the ground.

This practice is especially common on new build properties and estates across the UK. The use of plastic netting in turf production has become a widespread issue that needs immediate attention. According to a report by Friends of the Earth, microplastics from such practices can take hundreds of years to break down (Friends of The Earth, 2019). These particles can contaminate soil and waterways, posing significant risks to both terrestrial and aquatic life.

It's time we put an end to this harmful practice. We need stricter regulations on materials used for landscaping purposes - starting with banning the use of plastic netting in turf production.
