Prohibit the Use of IXL in Ohio Schools
The Issue
My friend, a student in an Ohio school, has been subjected to undue stress and pressure due to the use of IXL. This online learning platform, while designed to enhance education, has instead become a source of torment. The constant pressure to achieve perfect scores is akin to being under fire. It's time we address this issue.
IXL's adaptive learning environment may seem beneficial on the surface; however, it often leads students into a cycle of endless repetition until they achieve 100% accuracy. This approach doesn't foster understanding or mastery but rather promotes rote memorization and fear of making mistakes.
A study by Stanford University found that high levels of stress can negatively impact students' health and academic performance (Stanford News). In light of this information, it becomes clear that we need to reassess our use of tools like IXL which may contribute significantly towards such stress levels.
We call upon the Ohio Department Education and local school districts across the state to reconsider their use of IXL as an educational tool. Let us prioritize our children’s mental health over perfectionism. We urge you all - parents, teachers, students - who believe in creating a healthier learning environment for our children in Ohio schools - sign this petition today!
