I am one amongst many Americans living with an astigmatism. For us, night driving is already a challenge due to the visual aberration we experience. But with the advent of excessively bright LED headlights on vehicles, it has turned into a nightmare, rendering us almost incapable of seeing. Not only are these lights a mere nuisance for drivers with perfect vision, but they could also potentially be life-threatening for those with vision impairments such as astigmatism.

Millions of Americans share the same issue — approximately 34% of the population is said to have astigmatism that varies from mild to severe (American Academy of Ophthalmology). The issue of excessively bright LED lights isn't affecting only a small group but a large chunk of the population. Therefore, a law regulating the maximum permissible brightness of LED lights on vehicles is crucially required.

Taking into consideration the distress and danger these lights present, we need to ensure our roads are safe for everyone. Implementing a curb on excessively bright LED headlights will not only ensure everyone's safety, but will also give a more inclusive road experience for all.
