The Issue

Each year, millions of hermit crabs in the U.S. are cruelly victim to the decorative intentions of pet industry. Their shells, their natural homes, are doused in toxic paint which often leads to their premature death. This petition is a personal plea to end this cruel and unnecessary practice.

Hermit crabs, by nature, are required to switch shells as they grow. The decorative shells these innocent creatures are forced into are not only unnatural to their growth but are also toxic. Research from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and other institutions note that paints can contain harmful chemcials including heavy metals which are debilitating and often fatal to hermit crabs.

While the painted shells may seem attractive to the untrained eye, they are downright hazardous for these crabs. This practice is a clear case of animal cruelty, masked under the guise of supposed "pet care". Not only does it significantly reduce the lifespan of hermit crabs, but also subjects them to unnecessary distress and harm.

To protect the wellbeing and natural behaviors of hermit crabs, it is crucial to push for a legislation banning the sale of painted hermit crab shells. Let them live as nature intended, free from man's harmful interference. Make a stand for animal welfare. Please sign this petition to help these voiceless creatures and end this cruel practice.
