The Issue

Our family has been deeply affected by the unregulated use of fireworks. Our healthy 5-year-old dog, Lyssa, passed away this morning after suffering an stress-induced stroke that left her paralysed. This was a direct result of continuous fireworks displays in our neighbourhood, which lasted for over three weeks. They have been reported to cause extreme stress and fright, and in rare cases like Lyssa's, induce serious health conditions

Lyssa's tragic passing highlights the urgent need for change.

In the United Kingdom alone, a survey conducted in 2018 by PDSA found that 40% of dog owners reported their pets were afraid of fireworks. Therefore, we are advocating for a preventive measure to save countless animals from unnecessary anguish. We are appealing to lawmakers to impose a full ban on the selling of fireworks to the general public.

Our request is not to annihilate joy and celebration but to find alternative and safer ways to commemorate that do not put our beloved pets at unnecessary risk. We ask for empathy towards our pets, wildlife and neighbours who have no way of understanding the explosive chaos that descends upon their peaceful lives.

The Issues:

1. **Distress to Pets and Wildlife:** Fireworks are incredibly stressful for animals. The loud noises cause panic, leading to injuries, lost pets, and, as in Lyssa's case, tragic fatalities.

2. **Safety Concerns:** Fireworks pose a significant risk of injury. Many individuals have suffered burns and other injuries from improper handling or faulty fireworks.

3. **Impact on Vulnerable People:** The loud noises can severely affect individuals with PTSD and those with sensory issues, causing anxiety and distress.

4. **Environmental Impact:** Fireworks contribute to pollution, litter, and can start fires, causing further harm to the environment.

**Proposed Solution:**

We propose that fireworks should only be used in organised displays, which are regulated, insured, and managed with health and safety measures in place. These events can be enjoyed by the community without the associated risks of individual usage.

By signing this petition, we urge the council to act swiftly to ban the sale of fireworks to the general public and promote safe, organised events that can be enjoyed by all.

**Conclusion:**

We must prioritise the safety and well-being of our communities, pets, and wildlife. Let us come together to prevent further tragedies like Lyssa's and create a safer, more considerate environment for everyone.

Please sign this petition to support the prohibition of firework sales to the general public. Let us transform our celebratory traditions into ones that prioritise kindness and consideration for all living beings.
